2010 Newsletter #1

The Club's racing season has come and gone with mixed success. Cup day on the 24th of January was huge, with good weather and some exciting racing. The club's facilities, catering and the atmosphere generated by the large crowd impressed noted dignitaries Harness Racing SA General Manager David Aldred, Harness Racing SA Chairman Mr Grant Goodall and family, Board Members Adrian Edgar and Allen Tapp, Minister for Transport Pat Conlon, and Mayor of Victor Harbor Mary-Lou Corcoran.
Unfortunately the other three meetings scheduled struggled to stand up for various reasons. Our first meeting planned for the 3rd had to be cancelled due to a lack of nominations. Racing at Globe Derby on the Friday, Saturday and Monday as well as trials left too few trainers with horses that were willing to travel to Victor Harbor. The 10th brought temperatures of around 42 degrees which impacted greatly on crowd and horse numbers. The 17th saw small fields nominated in races.
Next year we will have to consider very carefully what trainers are wanting and how best to encourage them to nominate their horses for Victor Harbor races. The committee encouraged trainers to complete a survey at our last meeting to gain a better understanding of what they want.
Major results for the season:
Victor Harbor Trotting Cup - The Scribe, Trainer Tyson Linke
Victor Harbor Guineas - Waitpinga Bad Boy, Trainer Keith Joy
Horse of the Year Safe - Opportunity Trainer, Don Wenham
Driver of the Year - Scott Ewen
Trainer of the Year - Keith Joy
The committee have been busy over the last few months and below is a summary of their activities:
Many positive comments were received about the clubs recent upgrading of the track from the drivers, trainers and the general public. In December 240 tonnes of sand was spread and worked into the track providing an excellent racing surface that did not create dust.
Every race this year was sponsored, mostly by local businesses. The committee understands that it is difficult financial times for small business and we appreciate their generosity and support. Please support the businesses that support us. Take note of the logos of all of our sponsors. Please tell them why you are supporting them as this will also alert them to an advantage of their support with the club.
The new website has been up and running for about two months, and is one of the best trotting club website around. We intend to keep our members informed via this medium and another newsletter should be published in about three months.
